Topics range from models of strategic optimization in network controlled interactions, search algorithms for finding best strategies in games, combinatorial optimization in phylogenetics, to the analysis of (evolutionary) competition in biological and biomedical settings.\u00a0On these pages\u00a0you can find infomation on our research, on the courses we teach, and on upcoming events that relate to our work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NSO <\/strong>is part of the Department of Data Science and Knowledge Engineering (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maastrichtuniversity.nl\/about-um\/faculties\/science-and-engineering\/fse-departments\/department-data-science-and-knowledge\">DKE<\/a><\/strong>), which in turn belongs to the Faculty of Science and Engineering (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maastrichtuniversity.nl\/about-um\/faculties\/faculty-science-and-engineering\">FSE<\/a><\/strong>) of Maastricht University.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Latest News<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>August 9, 2018: Kate\u0159ina Sta\u0148kov\u00e1<\/strong>\u00a0hit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maastrichtuniversity.nl\/nl\/nieuws\/betere-behandelresultaten-kankerpati%C3%ABnten-dankzij-evolutionaire-speltheorie\">news<\/a> by publishing a paper in JAMA Oncology on the application of Stackelberg Game Theory to improve cancer treatment. This was picked up at many international news sites as well, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2018\/08\/180809112526.htm\">ScienceDaily<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/2018\/08\/10\/beating-cancer-game-theory\/\">Fortune<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>April 6, 2018:<\/strong>\u00a0<span id=\"ember5252\" class=\"ember-view\">DKE Vacancy: for the Digital Ludeme Project we are looking for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.academictransfer.com\/employer\/UM\/vacancy\/46037\/lang\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Phd student<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.academictransfer.com\/employer\/UM\/vacancy\/46036\/lang\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Postdoc<\/a> in Artificial Intelligence and Game Playing. Apply before\u00a0 April 30.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>February 7, 2018: Li You<\/strong> succesfully defended her PhD thesis titled Spatial and Nonspatial Evolutionary Games and Their Applications.<\/p>\n<p><strong>February 2, 2018:<\/strong> This day completes and exiting week on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lorentzcenter.nl\/lc\/web\/2018\/964\/info.php3?wsid=964&amp;venue=Oort\">Understanding Cancer Through Evolutionary Game Theory<\/a>\u00a0organized at the Lorentz Center in Leiden by\u00a0<strong>Kate\u0159ina Sta\u0148kov\u00e1<\/strong> and <strong>Frank Thuijsman<\/strong> in cooperation with <strong>Joel Brown<\/strong> and <strong>Robert Gatenby<\/strong> from the Moffitt Center, Tampa, Florida.<\/p>\n<p><strong>December 1, 2017: Cameron Browne<\/strong> has received a \u20ac2m ERC Consolidator Grant (<a href=\"https:\/\/erc.europa.eu\/news\/erc-2017-consolidator-grants-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/erc.europa.eu\/news\/erc-2017-consolidator-grants-results<\/a>) for the Digital Ludeme Project, to be run at NSO for five years starting mid-2018. This will be a computational study of the world\u2019s traditional games throughout recorded human history. The research team will include Cameron Browne, 2xRAs and 2xPhDs. Advertising these positions will start soon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>February 10 2017: <\/strong>LetaBot, written by our Master AI student <strong>Martin Rooijackers<\/strong>, wins the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maastrichtuniversity.nl\/news\/dke-student-wins-student-starcraft-ai-tournament\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">StarCraft AI tournament at SSCAI 2016 and finishes first in the SSCAI 2016 mixed division<\/a> as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>November 21 2016: <\/strong>BSc and MSc students are (as always!) welcome to approach members of the NSO group for thesis ideas. A fairly up-to-date list of topics can be found here: <a href=\"https:\/\/project.dke.maastrichtuniversity.nl\/nso\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/NSO-thesis-topics-2016.pdf\">NSO-thesis-topics-2016<\/a>. Staff members can also be approached individually to discuss alternative ideas for thesis topics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>September 30 2016: Dennis Soemers, Chiara Sironi, Torsten Schuster and Mark Winands<\/strong> received the Best Student Paper Award Enhancements for the paper &#8220;Real-Time Monte-Carlo Tree Search in General Video Game Playing&#8221; at the 2016 IEEE Conference on Computational Intelligence and Games.<\/p>\n<p><strong>September 30, 2016:<\/strong> MaastCTS2, written by our master AI student <strong>Dennis Soemers<\/strong>,\u00a0 won the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gvgai.net\/championship.php?t=2016&amp;t=sp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> GVG-AI Single Player Plannning Championship 2016<\/a>. It finished second at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gvgai.net\/championship.php?t=2016&amp;t=tp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> GVG-AI Two-Player Plannning Championship 2016<\/a>. Next, LetaBot finished third at the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/starcraftaic\/result\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> 2016 IEEE CIG StarCraft AI Competition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>September 1, 2016: <\/strong>Maastricht University will host the<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/project.dke.maastrichtuniversity.nl\/cig2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IEEE Computational Intelligence and Games Conference<\/a><\/em>, which will take place on August 14-17, 2018.<\/p>\n<p><strong>August 1, 2016: <\/strong>MaastCTS2, written by our master AI student Dennis Soemers, won the <a href=\"http:\/\/gvgai.net\/gvg_rankings.php?rg=9\">GVG-AI single-player competition at GECCO 2016<\/a>. MaastCTS2 also participated in the the <a href=\"http:\/\/gvgai.net\/gvg_rankings_2p.php?rg=2003\">GVG-AI two-player competition at the IEEE WCCI 2016<\/a>, where it finished third (out of 13).<\/p>\n<p><strong>May 1st, 2016: <\/strong>From today <strong>Georgios Stamoulis<\/strong> will be joining us for two years as a postdoc (on the project mentioned directly below). The Subgoal A* Agent finished first in the Rectangle track.<\/p>\n<p><strong>September 18, 2015: <\/strong>PhD. Defence Hendrik Baier, 16:00h, Tuesday, November 24, 2015.<\/p>\n<p><strong>July 9, 2015: <\/strong>From academic year 2015-2016 onwards our Master program in Operations Research will become a Master in Operations Research <em>and Data Science. <\/em>It will include a new course on Algorithms for Big Data, and data will be a recurring theme within several existing courses. The structure of the new program is available <a href=\"https:\/\/project.dke.maastrichtuniversity.nl\/nso\/?page_id=295\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>March 2, 2015:<\/strong> <strong>Chiara Sironi<\/strong> has joined NSO as a PhD student on the NWO project Learning Online Search-Control Knowledge for General Game Playing (GoGeneral), supervised by Mark Winands. At the same time, <strong>Matus Mihalak<\/strong> has joined NSO as an Assistant Professor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>February 27, 2015: <\/strong>Our LetaBot has won<a href=\"http:\/\/sscaitournament.com\/index.php?action=2014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> SSCAI 2014<\/a>.The StarCraft AI Tournament is an educational event. It serves as a challenging competitive environment mainly for students of Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science. Letabot finished first in the <a href=\"http:\/\/challonge.com\/sscai2014mixed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SSCAI 2014 mixed division <\/a>as well, which is open to non-students.
